Moke Girls

Does anyone know where this photo is taken?
Possibly at the same place this well dressed horse is - see comments below about Chania, Crete.

Where else would two pretty young ladies be sitting on a Moke : Think Mediteranean, think warm climate (perfect Moking weather). I say Spain,Portugal or Greece. Pehaps Greece due to the clean looking water.....

G'day Exo, thanks for the comment. I have thought Greece for the location,(not Greek girls!).Hope there is a lighhouse spotter out there who can help.Lots of harbours in Greece.

Have a look at the book "Lighthouses of Greece", ISBN 9781561644520. Maybe you'll find it here.

Found the book, and ordered it via inter-library loan. Would have thought exo would have known of this book, but remember they may not have the power on yet in Kythera. Or the messothimo haven't told them how to get the power connected. Thanx for the info, MB.

Just remember this: We gave the world democracy, architectually perfect temples, marble, bag pipes, light house locations to take photos of mokes etc...... We dont need power- costs money and the EU wont give us any more money till begin to "work harder" !!

I believe the photo was taken at Rethymno Harbour on the island of Crete (Kriti in Greek - hence the K prefix on the number plate). Rethymno is the third largest city on Crete. This lighthouse was built in 1864 and the hut tower stands at 8.3 metres high. It was built by the French Ottoman Lighthouse Company in 1864 when Rethymno was under Turkish control. It is the only Ottoman structure on the Ventian fort. It exhibited a fourth-order fixed light visible for 19km. The lighthouse was turned over to the Greek government on 5 May 1915, after the Balkan Wars. The lighthouse was damaged and has not been lit since the war.

My reference is "Lighthouses of Greece" by Elinor DeWire & Dolores Reyes-Pergioudakis (1st ed., p156) mentioned above.
I hope to be able to confirm this once I receive a response from the owners of website www.autowp.ru where this photo was first posted on the Internet. We just have to get past the barrier of translation - it is a Russian website!

Thanks for the info... As Greece was under Turkish occupation for 400 years , the Cretans still have high regard for the light house even with it's damaged gallery and stone work.

Old joke, but can't resist : "Cretans"!

No response from the Russian website administrators. Piy, as I am suspecting (after further research) that this is taken elsewhere on the island of Crete : at Chania (also spelt Xania in English). Chania is a beautiful harbour with a Venetian fort, and is also known for the hats on the horses there! I'll post a photo of an unusual horse in due course, and needless to say one of Chania Harbour.

I have been advised by the Archives Research at Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon UK "that the image is in our archive and is a Cowley Colour image and they were used as publicity shots for many different things. They don't have any information about the actual usage.
The description is Mini Moke in France and the date taken is 19/05/66."

I've not forgotten your search for the location of this photo and I've stumbled across two things that might be of interest. The first is a slightly different version in colour, here http://www.motorgraphs.com/image/419944/austin-mini-moke-1966
What is that red thing below the Austin badge?

The second is another photo which I guess was taken around the same time and place, because the car is wearing the same registration number, and there's a blonde and a brunette.

Thanks, Tim. Good spotting with that second photo.

The comment above from Gaydon was actually in reference to the colour photo you quote. The red thing below the Austin badge is some sort of dealer badge, I think. I cannot quite make it out on the hi-res image I have, nor on the b&w framed print I have of it.

I guess the search continues...

The Moke Club of Monaco & Cote D'Azur have advised that the photo is taken in St Tropez.
Many thanks to Tim who suggested it may be St Tropez, and for supplying the contact over there.
